Ever heard of a Midden? It’s a human-made mound structure of shell or other materials that was deposited by native peoples. Archaeologically, middens preserve a record of thousands of years of coastal occupation. The six-mound complex at @crystalriverarcheologicalstatepark is one of the longest continuously occupied sites in Florida, with the largest midden reaching over 28 feet tall, 182 feet long, and 100 feet wide. For 1,600 years, the area served as an imposing ceremonial center for Native Americans with an estimated 7,500 people visiting the complex every year!
